#1 The Thief’s Trash

Best friends, PB and Jay, find an expensive watch in the trash. They could turn it over to the police, but a friend has been blamed for stealing it. The watch might prove he’s guilty. Worse, the police may think PB and Jay helped steal it. So they decide to follow the clues and find the thief for themselves.

#2 The Teacher’s Pets

PB figures Ms. Zewkepper is the best fourth grade teacher in the world until she introduces the class to Wynken, Blyken, and Nod, three white rats. The teacher’s pets terrify PB, but the rest of the class is charmed by them. Her best friend, Jay, tries to help her get over her fears. But when Blyken goes missing, everyone except Jay blames PB.

#3 The Witch’s Curse

It was an accident. Honest. It was. PB and Jay didn’t mean to let the neighbor lady’s black cat get away.

But afterwards Jay’s jeans get ripped. PB loses her money. Her bike’s tires go flat. And she spills paint all over her poster. Bad luck seems to follow them wherever they go. And the neighbor lady does, too. Plus she dresses in long black robes. And she takes midnight strolls with her black cat. And she hums vaguely familiar songs to the night sky.

Is she a witch? Have they been cursed?

Armed with Jay’s growing collection of good luck charms, the pair try to unravel the mystery of the lady in black.

#4 Great Great Uncle’s Ghost

PB needs a treasure from her family’s past for her fourth grade school project. The treasure is in Grampa’s shed. Unfortunately so are rats, cobwebs, and other strange things. Like lights that mysteriously flicker on and off. And shadows that dance across the dust-covered windows. And boxes that tumble down when no one is there.

Are these strange happenings a warning? Or is a family ghost trying to tell PB something?

#5 The Fortune Teller’s Coin

PB’s little brother, Cal, dares her to do it. So PB has go. She has to visit the carnival’s fortune teller. A super strange woman stares into her crystal ball. Then she claims someone close to PB will betray her. Ridiculous. Right? As PB leaves, the fortune teller gives her a small coin – a reminder of her warning.

PB tries not to believe, but she carries the coin wherever she goes. Then the very next day PB helps a new boy, Adam, with his classwork. And her best friend, Jay, claims Adam is only pretending to be nice. And PB gets mad. Then Jay gets mad. And now there are mean whispers going around school about PB and Adam.

Could the fortune teller’s warning be right? Has Jay betrayed her by starting ugly rumors? Because, after all, PB always figured nobody was closer to her than Jay.

#6 Bandit’s Loot

PB and Jay agree to dog sit Bandit while a neighbor goes out of town for a few days. Feed him. Walk him. Give him lots of tummy rubs. What could go wrong? 

But minutes after Bandit’s owner disappears from view, the dog escapes. A frantic search later, PB and Jay finally find Bandit in the park. He’s covered in mud and has an object clamped in his mouth. After some heavy coaxing, the dog finally lets them look at his treasure.

It’s heavy and round like a large coin. When they scratch its crusted surface, gold glints up at them. Unanswered questions haunt them like ghosts from the past.

Is it real gold? Is there more where this came from? Where did Bandit dig it up? Imagining pirates and buried riches, PB and Jay search for the truth about Bandit’s treasure.

#7 The Cousins’ Club

PB has a fidgety case of the can’t-waits. Her twin cousins, Troy and Tony, are visiting during spring break. That equals a whole week of TNT fun – tons of laughs plus a little chaos. Even better, Mom and Dad have promised them a day at Abracadooza, an amazing theme park – if they are good the whole week.

When the twins arrive, PB’s happy excitement quickly fades. These are not the fun cousins she remembers. PB does her very best to be nice, but as her cousins’ pranks persist her frustration grows. And if she explodes, goodbye Abracadooza.

#8 The Magician’s Assistant

But then he asks for something she can’t give – the secret to the vanishing cabinet trick. He claims it’s the perfect show-stopping finale for his act. But a promise is a promise, so PB refuses.

Now Jay is mad at her. And she is mad at him for asking. To top it off, he goes and gets another assistant for his act.

Harrumph.

All tricks aside, PB is determined to discover a way to repair her friendship with Jay, and still keep her Magician’s-Assistant promise.
